What Herbs are Useful in Ayurvedic Treatments for Arthritis?

Traditional vs. alternative views on arthritis

Usually, we associate arthritis with extreme pain and aging. True enough, arthritis involves pain because of the swelling of the joints. Commonly observed in elderly people, arthritis is an autoimmune disease, meaning it is a condition in which the body attacks itself. It starts with acute pains in one or two joints, and eventually, it may lead to joint and bone deformities. That is how traditional medicine views arthritis.

Ayurveda, which is an alternative healing system that originatedin India, sees arthritis in a different light. Arthritis, according to Ayurveda, is a result of the buildup of ama or toxins that come from poor digestion. The ama goes throughout the body and builds up at the weaker areas of the body, including the joints. The buildup of toxins in the joints aggravates the vata or the air dosha, leading to a condition called amavata, which we know as arthritis.

In order to cure arthritis, Ayurveda aims to relieve the inflammation and pain of the joints. This is possible through reducing the vata and stopping the production of ama in the body. And to prevent accumulation of ama, Ayurvedic treatments for arthritis work by improving the body’s digestive processes. This can be performed on patients who are receiving health care services in the home.

  • Mahayogaraja guggulu – The proper dosage of this herbal medicine varies according to the climate. It should be taken twice a day in summer. In winter, the dosage must be doubled. Preferably, this medication is taken before meals and with warm water or milk.
  • Brihadvata chintamani – This herbal medicine is ideal for arthritis that involves pain in the bigger joints. It is taken in a dosage of 250 milligrams two or three timesa day. IFor arthritic pain in the spine, the dosage has to be increased for one week and before going back to the normal dosage afterwards.
  • Maharasandhi kwatha – It is commonly used as an effective cure for chronic arthritis.
  • Mahanarayana taila – This herbal remedy is applied externally on the affected joints. While applying the medicine, the joints need to be massaged as well. For better results, warm this oil before you apply it during winter season.
  • Castor seeds – These are useful for treating gout and rheumatoid arthritis. Usually made into a poultice, castor seeds are applied on the affected joints.
  • Garlic – Because of its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects, garlic is a popular ingredient in Ayurvedic treatments for arthritis.
